“A certain position” – Chelsea legend feels star player should have a fixed role

Gus Poyet feels Mason Mount should be played in one position for Chelsea

Speaking to the Midnite (h/t Football.London), Chelsea legend Gus Poyet shared his opinion on Mason Mount, his form and why the coaches need to play the Englishman in a certain position on the pitch to get the best out of him.

Poyet wants the coach to play Mount in one position and then play him there for 90% of the games. The Uruguayan went on to say that a player who is good in different positions, cannot play his best football if he is moved around the pitch.

Under Thomas Tuchel, Mount was used in various positions. The England international was at times played on the wing, sometimes as a number 10 and on a few occasions as a central midfielder. It is clearly evident that the 23-year-old is at his best when operating close to the striker impacting games in the final third.

Mason Mount was moved around to play in different positions this season so far.

Talking about all of it, here’s Poyet (h/t Football.London):

Mason, in my opinion and respect to the coaches, Mount should have a certain position in the team and should play 90% of the time in that position.

When you have a player like that who plays in different positions, it’s hard for him to play at his best. When Mount plays close to the strikers, close to the box, Chelsea create an enormous number of chances to score goals, when you play him too wide or deep, he’s a different player.

Last season, when Mount was predominantly playing as a number 10, he scored 11 goals and assisted 10 in 32 league appearances. Those were his best goal and assist returns in a league campaign.

For new manager Graham Potter, it is a challenge to make sure the 23-year-old is playing in the best position in his system.

Graham Potter has the know-how to get the best out of Mount.

The former Brighton and Hove Albion manager did have a similar player in Pascal Groß, who was used either as a number 10 or as a support striker. The German has three goals and two assists in six league games this season having played in positions close to the final third.

More Chelsea News:

Potter is a tactically superb manager, who knows where to fit the players in his system to find the best outputs. He can replicate the Groß tactics with Mount and expect great numbers from the Englishman. The 23-year-old has everything in his game from being a creative force to a goal-scoring threat.
