Gus Poyet believes Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will be important for Chelsea this season
Former Chelsea midfielder Gus Poyet believes that new signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will be important for Chelsea this season. This is despite Thomas Tuchel getting sacked.
Tuchel was sacked by the Blues on Wednesday. Former Brighton & Hove Albion coach Graham Potter has been named new coach at the west London club. Tuchel signed Aubameyang from Barcelona on the deadline day.
Aubameyang made his Chelsea debut in the 1-0 loss against Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday. It remains to be seen if the 33-year-old is part of the new coach’s plan. But Poyet, while speaking to Midnite (h/t Evening Standard), believes the striker will be important for the club this season.
I thought his first 20 minutes were outstanding, the movements, the way he ran in behind, the timing, I thought he would score three that game, then Chelsea lost. Aubameyang will be important for Chelsea this season.
The former Arsenal striker played for 60 minutes on his debut and found the back of the net. Only for the goal to be ruled out as offside. He was below par in that game and not surprisingly as he still has the jaw injury and did not train much with the team.
But he can’t be blamed for his performance. The entire team played poorly with Tuchel changing formations three times during the course of the game to find an answer for the Zagreb goal. This led to Mason Mount shifting around the pitch and out of position.
Mount is yet to score a goal or record an assist this season. The 23-year-old has gotten off to a very poor start which has led to criticism from fans and pundits alike. With a long way still to go, fans will hope he finds his form.
Potter was named the new head coach this Thursday. With the Premier League games getting postponed this weekend due to Her Majesty’s death, the new coach will have more time to implement his tactics and get to know the players better.
