Glen Johnson believes that Chelsea star Mason Mount must add goals and assists to his game to cement his England spot
Speaking to BettingOdds.com (h/t Football.London), former Premier League defender Glen Johnson has urged Chelsea star Mason Mount to add goals and assists to his game to cement his place in the England side.
Johnson, who has played for Chelsea along with other Premier League clubs including rivals Liverpool, has made 54 appearances for England while representing the nation in the Euros 2012 and World Cup 2014. So, he has an idea or two about earning a place in the national team.
Mount had a very good time scoring and assisting goals last season for Chelsea, netting 11 goals and assisting 10 in 32 league appearances. This season though, the Englishman has zero goals and assists in six league games.
Here’s what Johnson said regarding what the 23-year-old needs to do (h/t Football.London):
“Definitely. He needs to be scoring and creating goals because that’s what he’s good at. Mason was at the centre of everything that Chelsea did well last season, so he will be disappointed that he doesn’t have a goal and a couple assists already this season. You need to be playing well to play for England, that’s for sure. It can all change quickly and he can get a goal or assist from somewhere and end up with some pretty decent figures. To cement himself in England’s World Cup starting line-up, then he’s got to start getting himself some goals.”
The difference this season compared to last has been the number of positions Mount has had to play in the first six league games itself. Apart from his usual attacking midfield or wing position, he has been used as a central midfielder as well to fill up the places vacant due to injuries or suspensions.
With players hopefully back in their positions for games after the international break, the 23-year-old can get back to playing in his favoured positions. By doing that, he can get his form back and start to score or assist goals again.
The other issue with Mount is that Chelsea, as a team, are not playing well at the moment. The manager was sacked earlier this month and there is a feeling of being in transition under Graham Potter.

Now, it is up to him to start showing his quality and inspire the team to follow suit. While getting back to form is important ahead of the World Cup, the Blues need him to start firing again and help them win games of football.
