Glen Johnson believes that Kai Havertz could see limited game time at Chelsea
Former England right-back Glen Johnson believes that Kai Havertz’ could experience a drop in game time under new Chelsea manager Graham Potter.
He also believes that Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly make look to bring in an upgrade in the German’s position. The former Blues man believes that the 23-year-old’s inconsistent performances could see him dropped.
Speaking to Genting Casino (h/t football.london), the former right-back gave his opinion on the attacking midfielder and even called the 23-year-old ‘lazy’.
“Chelsea could look to replace Havertz, yes. Teams are always looking to strengthen their squad. Things change fast in football and he’s come up with some big goals in big games but for me he doesn’t do it often enough. When he’s on it, he looks great. But in terms of the way he players, he looks slow and it looks lazy.”
Havertz has been a regular for the Blues ever since joining them from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen in 2020. The 23-year-old, if anything is a fan favourite at Stamford Bridge.
An attacking midfielder by trade, he was usually deployed as a centre-forward by former manager Thomas Tuchel. But that seems unlikely to happen under Graham Potter. The midfielder was used in his natural position for his first game in charge.
The midfielder has had a mixed time at the Blues till now. He was the hero for the club as his goal secured the Champions League for the Blues in 2020. But he has been inconsistent in front of goal for most of the season.
With a new manager at the helm, places in the starting eleven are naturally up for grabs. The 23-year-old German international will also be wise to put in extra effort at training and impress his new boss. If not, then Johnson could be proved right.
