Christoph Freund appointment could help Chelsea in signing Benjamin Sesko in the future
According to Football.London, Chelsea appointing RB Salzburg sporting director Christoph Freund could help them in the race to sign summer target Benjamin Sesko in the future.
Young Salzburg forward Sesko was a subject of interest from the Blues, but formulating a deal was a difficult ask with the player agreeing to join fellow Red Bull club in Leipzig. He stayed in Austria for one more year before joining the Bundesliga side.
The 19-year-old, who is now a Slovenian international and considered one of the best young strikers in Europe, was a youth product of Slovenian club NK Domzale before signing up for the Salzburg youth side in 2019. He then spent two seasons on loan at Austrian second division club FC Liefering.
Last season was Sesko’s first playing for Salzburg’s first team. He scored 11 goals and assisted seven in 37 appearances in all competitions. Five goals and two assists in 13 appearances this season is a decent start as well.
Although the 19-year-old has signed a deal till 2028 with Leipzig, there could be a chance for some of the big clubs in Europe to prize him away from Germany after he has spent a season or two there. If that is the case, Chelsea could have an advantage in having Freund as their sporting director.
The Blues are closing in on getting the deal over the line for the director. Co-owner Todd Boehly was impressed with the talks and he is a big fan of the Red Bull multi-club model.
The 45-year-old was the one who brought Sesko to Salzburg before agreeing on a deal with Leipzig. The age of the player is such that even if he is available in two to three years’ time, he would still be a developing force who has gotten better compared to now.

Freund seems to be a wise potential appointment by the Blues – one that could also help us scout our very own Seskos, Erling Haalands, and Naby Keitas.
