Fabrizio Romano: Chelsea owner Todd Boehly wanted to sign Erling Haaland

According to the claims made by transfer market journalist Fabrizio Romano (h/t Sun), Chelsea owner Todd Boehly wanted to sign star striker Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund before Manchester City did.

It is revealed that due to the protracted nature of the takeover, Boehly was not in charge of the club when City were finalising a deal with Dortmund to sign the Norwegian international.

The English champions completed the deal by April, at a time when Chelsea were busy dealing with the sanctions imposed on the club because of the previous Russian owner Roman Abramovich and the situation in Russia.

The American takeover took some time to reach its conclusion, and it was not before May 30 that the sale of Chelsea was completed to a Boehly-led consortium worth £4.25bn. Looking at what Haaland has done so far in the Premier League this season, any top club owner would regret not signing him.

The 22-year-old has scored 10 goals in six league games and three in two Champions League games so far. While those numbers are already scary for opposition teams, it feels like he is still in his settling down phase. It can only mean one thing – breakage of several records by the end of this season.

After a lot of graft in the transfer window, Chelsea finally managed to sign a striker in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on deadline day. Now, the manager who brought the former Arsenal marksman here was sacked a week later.

More Chelsea News:

The club is in the transition phase with new manager Graham Potter in charge. Boehly has no time to regret the past and needs to steer the ship in the right direction. Hiring a sporting director to handle all football-related operations would be a good start.
