“It’s a big gamble” – Chelsea legend not sure of Chelsea’s managerial appointment

Sander Berge shuts down rumours linking him to Chelsea.

Emmanuel Petit is unsure if Graham Potter will succeed at Chelsea

Speaking to Lord Ping (h/t Football.London), Chelsea legend Emmanuel Petit is unsure whether the newly appointed Blues manager Graham Potter will succeed at the club.

Petit believes the appointment of Potter is a gamble taken by the club. Although the Frenchman respects the work done by the former Brighton and Hove Albion and Swansea City manager, he labels the world at Chelsea to be completely different.

Potter was hired as the new Blues boss, a day after Thomas Tuchel was sacked by the owners. The German led the club to European success in 2021, but an underwhelming start to the current season was enough for him to be removed from the job.

Here’s Petit talking about the new manager (h/t Football.London):

Graham Potter is a gamble for Chelsea. I have big respect for the work Potter has done at Brighton; the team has improved so much but Chelsea is a new world for him, it’s completely different.

To an extent, the Frenchman is right because the clubs that Potter has worked at so far haven’t had expectations of the level at Chelsea.

The counterargument is that he has worked wonders under limited resources and always got the best out of the players. So, if the Englishman gets better players, he possesses the tactical know-how to set them up in the best possible way to win games of football.

It would be interesting to find out how he can manage the big egos in the dressing room. He may not have concurred with those issues working at Brighton or Swansea for example.

Furthermore, despite the fact that the owners have given him a five-year contract – will he get enough time to implement his ideas to build a platform for long-term success, even if the results in the near future get affected by it? The answer to that would only be known to the owners of the club.
