Mason Mount has given his verdict following Chelsea’s defeat vs Dinamo Zagreb
Chelsea started their new Champions League campaign in the worst possible way, after they were defeated 1-0 by Dinamo Zagreb.
Speaking to BT Sport (h/t football.london), Mason Mount has given his verdict and declared that his side must up their standards. The 23-year-old could not hide his disappointment after their embarrassing loss.
“We have to be brutally honest with ourselves, it’s not good enough. It’s the first game of the Champions League. We need to make a good start. Obviously, we started the game well, but we let it slip away, and that’s happened over the last couple of games. It’s something we need to look at.”
Former manager Thomas Tuchel also made a similar assessment after their defeat. Things have gone from bad to worse for the German coach as he was sacked this (Wednesday) morning.
Mount started the game in Croatia but he too was disappointing. The 23-year-old struggled to create chances, while was also unable to find himself at the end of any.
The entire team played in a very disappointing way. They were nowhere near to the standards a club like Chelsea should have on Champions League nights. Reece James was the only light for the club in such a below-par performance.
James was one of the best players on the pitch and also came close to scoring. The right wing-back created many chances and also performed his defensive duties very well. He has emerged as one of the best players in the past few months for the club, and this performance will only add to his merit.
With their manager getting the sack after their disappointing loss, it now remains to be seen who is appointed in Tuchel’s place. But no matter who comes, the Blues need to win and do so convincingly. The Blues have started this season poorly, but can still improve.
