Bundesliga honcho refuses to rule out Stamford Bridge switch

Christoph Freund refused to rule out the prospect of joining Chelsea

Christoph Freund has refused to rule out the prospect of joining Chelsea after emerging as a possible candidate for the Sporting Director’s position at the club.

The RB Salzburg director is among the names who have been shortlisted for the role and is said to have held talks with the Blues for the same. The 45-year-old was at Stamford Bridge last night as he saw his side take on the west London club for their Champions League match.

In an interview published in the Daily Mail, the Salzburg sporting director refused to rule out the possibility of joining the Premier League side.

You should never rule anything out in football and Chelsea are such a huge club. But I’m sports director in Salzburg and I really enjoy it. Chelsea is a huge club in transition. I can’t say exactly what will happen in the next few weeks and months.

New owners of Chelsea hope to appoint a sporting director before the World Cup kicks off in November this year. They are said to have held talks with several candidates, both with Premier League experience and European ones.

Freund has worked at the Austrian club for a long-time now and has unearthed and recruited several talents throughout the years. Some of those talents include Erling Haaland, Dayot Upamecano and the most recent being Benjamin Sesko.

The Blues were interested in Sesko this summer. However, the 19-year-old opted to stay at his current side for this season and will join the German side, RB Leipzig, next summer. Freund seems like the perfect candidate to lead Chelsea into the new era.

Marina Granovskaia left her role as sporting director of the club this summer after a change in personnel by co-owner Todd Boehly. Since then, Boehly has acted as interim sporting director, but will look to appoint one permanently and relinquish himself of such a huge task.

More Chelsea News:

It remains to be seen who is appointed for the role at the club. Granovskaia was a fan favourite during her tenure as director and whoever takes up the role will have some big shoes to fill.
