Chelsea will step up talks for a new contract with Mason Mount
According to the Telegraph, Chelsea will hold talks with Mason Mount and step up their attempts to sign him on a new contract soon. It has come after the club agreed on a contract extension with another young star Reece James.
James has signed a new deal at Stamford Bridge which is going to keep him at the club till 2028. Mount’s current contract lasts till 2024, the last of which he signed in the summer of 2019.
New Chelsea owners have made it a priority that their highly-rated and extremely talented academy products become one of the best-paid players at the club. James was one of the lowest-paid players before he signed a new deal. The same goes with Mount until he agrees to an extension.
Mount has been one of the top players at the club after his successful loan spell at Derby County during the 2018-19 season. He scored nine goals and provided five assists in 38 games in the Championship and the playoffs that year.
Since then, his numbers and overall contribution to Chelsea doing well has been fantastic. The 23-year-old’s best season in a blue shirt came last season when he scored 11 goals and assisted 10 in 32 league appearances.
Not just that, Mount is a flexible player who can impact the game positively in multiple positions. He can play as a winger, as an attacking midfielder or as one of the number eights.
Given his performance levels thus far and the prospect of it getting better in years to come, this offer by Chelsea makes sense.
