USMNT coach says Tuchel’s Chelsea sacking could be “positive news” due to one reason

Chelsea News: USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter believes Thomas Tuchel sacking could be a positive for Christian Pulisic

Thomas Tuchel’s dismissal as Chelsea manager could be positive news for some of the players struggling under him. The Blues sacked Tuchel earlier on Wednesday after a shocking 1-0 defeat against Dinamo Zagreb.

They did not have to wait long for a new coach, as co-owner Todd Boehly appointed Graham Potter as the new Blues manager in less than 24 hours of sacking Tuchel.

And with the German tactician leaving, there is a feeling that his exit will allow some players to flourish, especially Christian Pulisic. And his country’s national team coach feels the same. Speaking to The Associated Press (h/t Metro), the USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter gave his thoughts.

“I’m not happy a guy lost his job, but if this means more opportunity for Christian, then it’s positive. He’s a guy that’s proven that he can perform at that level. We’ll just have to wait and see.”

Pulisic joined the west London club in the summer of 2019 from Borussia Dortmund. There were high hopes and expectations from the young American international.

A new life at Chelsea for Pulisic?

However, such expectations were short-lived. Despite winning the Champions League in his first season with the club, the 23-year-old’s inconsistent performances raised questions. The American lost the trust of Tuchel and was shifted to the bench.

The winger managed to make only 22 league appearances last season, starting in only 13 of them. This season too things have not changed. He has played in all six league games this season, but has started in only one. The American was also blocked from leaving this summer, hampering any chances of getting regular minutes.

Now with a new manager at the helm who is known to have confidence in young players, the 23-year-old has a chance to rejuvenate his Blues career. With the World Cup in November, the USMNT captain will hope to get regular minutes under the new coach.

It remains to be seen how and where the winger is used by Potter. If he can be used well, then it would almost be like a new signing.

Fans would feel like Chelsea have had several talented players that haven’t fulfilled their potential under Tuchel. If Pulisic can become an important player for us in the near future, then perhaps the German’s sacking could have a silver lining for us.
