According to Evening Standard, Chelsea will continue their approach to buy a club from Brazil, this time looking at smaller ones after Santos rejected the idea of getting bought.
The Blues, under the new American ownership led by Todd Boehly, are looking at the possibility of buying clubs from around the world to expand their brand into a multi-club organisation. Manchester City have a similar model, as is the Red Bull approach.
The west London club have already sounded out options in Portugal, Belgium and Brazil. Their aim is to foster and stockpile young players and also have certain clubs feed their best players for success in the long term.
The 2021 Champions League winners were in contact with Santos, but the Brazilian giants, who have had graduates like Neymar and Pele, were not interested. As a result, Chelsea would now be looking at approaching smaller clubs from Brazil and getting them under their wing.
What this approach will do is end the “loan army” method acquired by former owner Roman Abramovich to trade and balance books to not get caught in the Financial Fair Play sanctions.
The new owners have had a lot to do since their arrival in the summer. They have already sacked manager Thomas Tuchel and hired Graham Potter last week, while the lookout to appoint a new sporting director is active.
With no sporting director during the summer window, co-owner Boehly had to work as an interim in that position to deal with the agents and complete the transfers of players.
This model of expanding the Chelsea brand worldwide is an interesting one. It does have its challenges, but the rewards are good. The Blues then can have greater coverage of scouting the best young talents to bring to the squad.
The owner’s ambitions know no bounds. They have spent £271.1million this summer, fired Tuchel to replace him with Potter, and it is said that he could the English manager £300million to spend in the transfer windows in 2023.
