Chelsea sack Thomas Tuchel following poor start to the season
Chelsea have announced via their Twitter handle that they have parted ways with Thomas Tuchel. His sacking will come as a shock to many fans and rivals. The German was sacked after his 100th game in charge of the club.
Tuchel was appointed by the west London club in January 2021 to replace Frank Lampard. The German in his first five months in charge led the Blues to Champions League glory and also won the UEFA Super Cup.
Surprisingly, the new owners in Todd Boehly and co have taken such a drastic decision. His sacking comes after the new owners are about to complete 100 days of their ownership of the club.
The Blues spent heavily during the summer and got a squad ready to challenge for silverware with Tuchel at the helm. However, things did not go according to the plan. The west London club have struggled in the past few games.
After a win and a draw in his first two games this season, the Blues were thrashed by Leeds United. They bounced in the next game against Leicester City but lost to Southampton the following week. They managed to scrap a win against West Ham United at home last weekend, but the loss against Dinamo Zagreb in their opening Champions League game was the last straw for the German coach.
The Telegraph (subscription required) reports that Assistant Manager Anthony Barry is likely to take temporary charge of the squad until a replacement is found. Graham Potter is set to be the early frontrunner to replace Tuchel at the Bridge.. The English coach led his Brighton & Hove Albion side to a ninth finish last season and currently sit fourth on the table, three points ahead of the Blues.
Boehly and co will want to move swiftly and appoint a new manager as soon as possible. An approach for Potter is likely to be made. Apart from him, Mauricio Pochettino, Zinedine Zidane and Benfica manager Roger Schmidt are also said to be under consideration.
