A View From The Bridge

Romano claims there is “no talk” about Chelsea reigniting interest in Premier League megastar

No talks yet from Chelsea to approach Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo in January

According to Fabrizio Romano in his exclusive Caught Offside column, there are no talks yet from Chelsea regarding approaching Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo during the January transfer window.

It is revealed that the Blues are busy with other priorities at this moment in time, including appointing a new sporting director. There have been reports saying that owner Todd Boehly wants to hire a new sporting director before the World Cup.

Ronaldo was a summer target for Chelsea, with the owners wanting to make a statement by signing the Portuguese superstar. But, manager Thomas Tuchel, who is now sacked, did not approve of this move as he thought the player would not suit the system.

That disagreement apparently was one of the few reasons behind the German getting the duty-relieving order from the American owners.

Chelsea did eventually sign a striker on the deadline day when they completed the deal for former Arsenal marksman Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Whether the owners, along with the new manager Graham Potter, want to sign Ronaldo in the future remains to be seen.

There is no doubting the five-time Champions League and one of the greats of football, but he is 37 years old and is not starting games for Manchester United even though they are not blessed with many.

So, it kind of shows why Tuchel was not in favour of this move. As good a player Ronaldo is, age catches up with anyone. So, rather than wasting time trying to sign him in January, the Blues can look at better options.

More Chelsea News:

Moreover, with Aubameyang already signed, Chelsea do have a top-quality striker who can score goals and lead the line well. He is 33 and looks as if he has a few years left in his tank. Adding Ronaldo would mean pressure on the manager to either start both or rotate them. Neither option sounds any fun.
