Chelsea plan to extend first-team star’s contract at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea in plans to extend the contract of Edouard Mendy

According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea are planning to extend the contract of their goalkeeper Edouard Mendy in the coming weeks. The Senegalese international arrived at Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2020.

Mendy is in plans for contract extension along with other key players, as the current Todd Boehly regime is not looking to repeat the mistakes of the past, where players like Antonio Rudiger were allowed to run the contract down before leaving for Real Madrid.

Mendy has been one of the best additions to the squad. He played a key role in the Blues’ success in the Champions League in 2021. The 30-year-old replaced Kepa Arrizabalaga in goal, the latter of whom struggled to justify his place in the side.

Edouard Mendy has been one of top keepers in the Premier League since his arrival at Chelsea.

Extending his contract would show the club’s intent to reward their important players and keep them for as long as possible. At 30, Mendy as a goalkeeper still has quite a few years to offer, and Chelsea would hope most of it is spent at Stamford Bridge.

The former Stade Rennais keeper is a solid presence between the sticks and can command the box from crosses and set-pieces. Although he sometimes can be a bit sloppy with the ball at his feet, those mistakes do not happen very often.

All in all, it is a very good idea for Chelsea to contemplate extending the 30-year-old’s stay. The hope would be that the player retains his consistency levels and continues to even get better. If he does that, the Blues will have that goalkeeping spot sorted for the next five to six years.

More Chelsea News:

The club have done well to make clever, intelligent additions at the back in the summer to supplement the defensive side of the squad, to help Mendy keep more clean sheets in games and seasons to come.
