As per a tweet from Graeme Bailey, transfer correspondent for 90min Football (h/t Football.London), Chelsea are exploring the possibility to appoint Sevilla sporting director Monchi to fill up the vacant position at the club.
The Blues were without a sporting director in the summer transfer window. As a result, co-owner Todd Boehly had to step in that role to get the player deals over the line, with able help from the former manager Thomas Tuchel.
However, once the transfer window was shut, the club was keen on appointing a sporting director, preferably before the World Cup starting in November.
Monchi, who is now in his second spell at Sevilla after the first spell lasting 17 years, impressed Boehly in their talks during the summer. The 54-year-old is an experienced sporting director, with over 20 years of work.
Last week, Chelsea were closing in on the appointment of Christoph Freund from RB Salzburg. It was revealed that the agreement between the Austrian and the club was done with only the papers left to be signed. However, the Austrian champions kept hold of their man and Freund himself released a statement committing his future there.
The other option was former Liverpool director Michael Edwards. The issue with him is that he wanted to take a sabbatical from the game after leaving his position at Liverpool in the summer.
The Blues are also linked with Bayer Leverkusen’s Tim Steidten and Leeds United’s Victor Orta. One of their conditions before finalising the name is the person’s expertise in incorporating data in scouting and recruitment of players.
Whether that condition is still in place and in which direction the will club go, only time will tell. One thing is clear – if they want a sporting director before the first week of November, the process of hiring needs to speed up again.
