Speaking to French TV channel Telefoot (h/t Evening Standard), France international and World Cup winner Benjamin Pavard revealed that he had considered leaving Bayern Munich in the summer amidst interest from Chelsea, Manchester United and other top European clubs Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and Atletico Madrid.
Pavard is in the final two years of his contract in Munich having joined in 2019 from Stuttgart. He has won a Champions League and three league titles with the German champions, in a spell that has been glittered with trophies. He was also part of the France team that won the World Cup in 2018.
The defender confirmed that there were discussions with other clubs in the summer for a potential move. Reports listed down the clubs mentioned above that were interested in him. He was persuaded by Bayern manager Julian Nagelsman to stay, however, that won’t deter him from looking to move on in the future.
Here’s what the 26-year-old said via Telefoot (h/t Evening Standard):
“I questioned myself, I had calls from different clubs with my agent.
Afterwards, I had the Bayern coach with whom we spoke and with whom we have a good relationship. He made me understand that I was in his plans, that I was important for the team.
Maybe one day I will go to one of these clubs, you never know what the future holds. I’m still a year at Bayern Munich. Afterwards, we have time to project ourselves.”
Pavard is one of the top defenders in European football. His versatility is an added strength to an array of qualities he possesses. He can play anywhere across the back line and can do a great job in defensive midfield.
The Frenchman is a fantastic passer of the ball, reads the game well defensively and is strong in physical battles with opposition forwards especially playing in central defence.
Looking at his CV, we doubt the 26-year-old can do much more at Bayern. He has won all the big trophies there. That could be the reason why he wants a fresh challenge moving forward. We shouldn’t be surprised if he is available for transfer in the 2023 summer transfer window.
Chelsea should be all over in their pursuit to sign him if that is the case. The Blues could do with a player who can play in multiple positions across the back-line and do well in all of them. His propensity on the ball could tempt manager Graham Potter to push for the signature.
