According to CBS Sports (h/t Express), Tottenham Hotspur are said to have joined Chelsea in pursuit of Inter Milan centre-back Milan Skriniar.
Tottenham are ‘loosely’ in the race for Skriniar, which also involves Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain. The Blues are said to be in talks for a deal of around £59 million for the 27-year-old.
Skriniar joined Inter from Sampdoria in 2017 and has gone on to establish himself as one of the best defenders in Serie A. Thomas Tuchel is looking to add more defensive enforcements this summer and Skriniar fits that bill perfectly.
The Slovakian centre-back would fit in perfectly in Tuchel’s back three, having played in a similar set-up at Inter. He could be the perfect partner to Kalidou Koulibaly and Thiago Silva at the back for Chelsea next season.
However, the 27-year-old has previously played under Antonio Conte and won the league with him. A reunion with his former manager could lure the player away from Stamford Bridge. If this was not enough, PSG are also interested in the player, and Tuchel looks to have a battle in his hands for the player.
With the departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen last month for free and the futures of Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso uncertain, a defender is desperately needed. Skriniar could help solve these problems, but he will neither come cheap nor easy.
Skriniar played a crucial role last season as Inter won the Italy Cup and finished second in the league, behind rivals AC Milan. Chelsea will have to present a very good offer as the Nerazzurri could be reluctant to sell their star defender. The 27-year-old would make a phenomenal signing for the Blues this summer.
Tuchel and co will have to plan their moves very well. A wrong move and they could potentially lose the centre-back to an arch-rival. Fans will hope that if Skriniar leaves, he leaves for Stamford Bridge only.
