A View From The Bridge

Chelsea star set to return to former club; medical scheduled for “later today”

Transfer News: Timo Werner set to join RB Leipzig from Chelsea with medicals scheduled

Two years ago Chelsea announced the signing of Timo Werner from RB Leipzig. Now, he is set to return to his former club this summer, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Romano claims that contracts between the two clubs have been signed. The 26-year-old is set to join his former side for €20 million plus add-ons. Werner is set to undergo a medical later today.

Werner departs after having fallen down the pecking order at the club. Since his arrival, the 26-year-old has failed to replicate his superb Bundesliga goal-scoring form. On the contrary, he has struggled in front of goal during his time at Stamford Bridge.

But that does not mean he could not perform. His work ethic was of the highest order and the German international won the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup during two years at Chelsea.

Romelu Lukaku was bought last year due to Werner’s inconsistent form in front of goal. However, the Belgian also failed to leave his mark and has been shipped back to Inter Milan on loan this summer. The arrival of Raheem Sterling also did not help Werner’s cause.

Werner managed to score 23 goals for the Blues in 89 matches in all competitions. He could only manage to start 15 league games last season. This clearly showed that he had lost Thomas Tuchel’s trust. To add to all this, Tuchel did not select him in his squad for the opening game against Everton last Saturday.

This clearly shows that if Werner stayed back, he would get very limited playing time. This is something that the player would want to avoid, given he wishes to make the Germany squad for the World Cup in November. A return back to his former club could help him regain his lost form.

Bayern Munich’s Serge Gnabry is a real threat for Werner with regards to starting down the middle for Germany. Regular playing time at the club level will surely help Werner’s cause.

More Chelsea News:

Werner will be missed by the Chelsea faithful. But the arrival of Sterling and the rise of Armando Broja in the squad would only make it difficult for the German to get the desired game-time. A move will benefit the Blues too as it frees up some space in the wage book, allowing the club to make another signing.
