Transfer News: Timo Werner confirms leaving Chelsea for RB Leipzig
Taking to his official Twitter account, talented German striker Timo Werner has confirmed that he is leaving Chelsea after a couple of seasons at Stamford Bridge to make his return to RB Leipzig ahead of the new campaign.
Chelsea signed Timo Werner back in 2020 in a move that was received with high anticipation. He was expected to be the leading man for the Blues contributing with goals and assists but things never seemed to materialize for him at Stamford Bridge.
The German striker came to the club on the back of his best season in the Bundesliga. Timo Werner was scoring goals for fun during his time at Leipzig back then and he was widely regarded as one of the best young strikers in European football.
Although he had a fairly decent start to life as a Chelsea striker when he joined, he slowly yet surely started to struggle. He eventually lost the confidence of Frank Lampard and found himself out of the side. Things did not change much even after Thomas Tuchel took over.
In 89 games for the Blues over the span of two seasons, Timo Werner has scored 23 goals and provided 21 assists across all competitions. These numbers are rather disappointing for a striker who managed to score the same tally in one season in Leipzig.
It is still not evident as to why Timo Werner wasn’t a success at Chelsea. He definitely has what it takes to be a quality striker and he is still very young. It is just that the German did not manage to show these qualities in a Blues shirt during his time here.
A return to the home country might just be what the German needs to resurrect his faltering career. The talented striker is a part of Hansi Flick’s plans for the national team and he will want to hit much-needed form before the showdown in Qatar.
A fit and firing Timo Werner will be a different proposition in the German national team. If a return to Germany helps him rediscover his confidence and his shooting boots, this could have been the best decision that the striker has taken for his career.
