Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel could be facing a dilemma this summer whether to allow Timo Werner to leave or not. The German striker is said to be close to returning to the Bundesliga.
According to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettengberg via Twitter (h/t Express), Werner’s return to RB Leipzig is getting ever-closer with negotiations said to be running at full speed.
Leipzig are said to be considering both loan and permanent deal for the 26-year-old. The striker is willing to take a drastic salary cut to return back to his homeland.
Werner moved to west London from Leipzig in 2020 following his exceptional run in front of goal. The 26-year-old arrived with very high expectations, but has failed to live to it.
Despite winning the Champions League in his first season with the Blues, the striker has been criticised for his inconsistency in front of goal. The German international has scored 23 goals in 89 appearances for the Blues in all competitions till date.
Such inconsistency has led to him falling down the pecking order. Tuchel only started him in 15 league games last season, indicating that the coach is losing trust in the player. Raheem Sterling’s arrival this summer could also potentially push Werner further down the pecking order.
Now the offer from Leipzig and the player’s willingness to re-join the club should Tuchel in a state of dilemma. Despite the striker’s poor form in front of goal, he has a very good work ethic and gives his all in every game. A fan favourite at the Bridge, his departure could upset a certain section of the Blues faithful.
Tuchel has the final say in this regard and it remains to be seen what he decides upon. Werner’s departure could open up a potential space for Armando Broja in the team next season. Broja has been desperate to be given a chance and looks like he could have it come the new season.
