Manchester United are keen to rival Chelsea for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
According to The Sun (h/t Daily Star), Manchester United are keen to rival Chelsea for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. But the Red Devils know that they face a challenge to secure his signature.
New coach Erik ten Hag is keen to bolster his attacking options, and have turned their attention to the former Arsenal captain. United had considered a move for the 33-year-old when he left the Emirates in January but to no avail.
The player could now be headed back to England after a six-month stint with Barcelona. Chelsea could do with a number nine. A position that seems to haunt the players, an experienced, goal-scoring and lethal striker could help lift that curse.
Also, Thomas Tuchel could do with a familiar face, having coached the Gabonese during their time together at Borussia Dortmund.
Kai Havertz and Raheem Sterling have rotated to play in the striker position for the last two games. With the wing-backs creating numerous chances throughout the game, the absence of a proper number nine is felt in the opposition box.
Aubayemang could become that presence. The 33-year-old is a proven striker in the Premier League and could help add in a few more goals for the club. His record speaks for himself having scored 68 times in 128 league appearances for the Gooners.
With Chelsea also being able to offer Champions League football, it could be an extra incentive for the forward to choose them over their rivals. The two clubs are also in the fray for another Barcelona player, Frenkie de Jong. The Dutchman is said to be open to a move to Samford Bridge over Old Trafford.
The former Arsenal man could be a good fit in Tuchel’s system, having played under it before. Should he stay at the La Liga club, he is likely to get very less playing time. The arrival of Robert Lewandowski has made him the undisputed number one striker at the Catalonia club.

It remains to be seen if Tuchel and co make a move for him. A clinical player who is also very good in the air, the 33-year-old would make a fine addition to Tuchel’s squad for this season. Fans will hope that their team can continue their good run when they travel to face Leeds United this Sunday.
