A View From The Bridge

Forgotten Chelsea wideman open to leaving the club this summer

Transfer News: Kenedy is open to an exit from Chelsea

According to the Evening Standard Live Transfer Blog, Kenedy is open to making an exit from Chelsea, following a series of loan spells away from Stamford Bridge but never being able to find a permanent spot in the squad.

The Brazilian arrived in west London in the summer of 2015 for an undisclosed fee from Brazilian side Fluminense. Since then, he has had multiple loan spells from clubs in England, Europe and back in Brazil as well. He somehow stayed at Chelsea last season and made three appearances in all competitions.

With the transfer window very close to being shut in Europe, it remains to be seen if the out-of-favour 23-year-old will be loaned out or signed by a club in this continent.

The player himself is keen on a move back to Brazilian side Flamengo, a club where he spent one of his loan spells, making 17 appearances.

Speaking about his situation to SportBuzz (h/t Evening Standard), here’s Kenedy:

“I was sad to have left earlier than expected. I would have liked to stay longer, but it was not as I dreamed. I hope one day to return and everything will be different.”

“I played half a season in each team, so I didn’t have many opportunities. There’s no way to evaluate my season, but my goal as a professional is always to surpass myself more and more, we always want to enter the pitch to win.”

Positionally, predominantly a wide forward or wide midfielder by trade, the Brazil U23 international has played in every position possible in wide areas of both sides of the field and led the line in some games. The issue with him is that he has never been a settled player in any of the clubs he spent time with.

That makes the manager unsure of what to do with the player, where to fix him in the system and more. One of his positive loan moves was at Newcastle United, where he made 38 Premier League appearances in two seasons (2017/18 and 2018/19), chiefly operating as a left-sided wide midfielder.

Fans would not be sure where he can fit in the current Chelsea system, especially in a formation of Tuchel with wing-backs and tucked-in wide forwards.

So, it would make sense for the Blues to let go of Kenedy sooner rather than later. There is no point keeping someone who has no future at the club. Furthermore, the player himself is keen to move as well which helps.

More Chelsea News:

He still has time to resuscitate his career elsewhere. Hopefully, he finds the minutes and trust he is looking for elsewhere because right now, it is hard to come by at Chelsea.
