According to Fabrizio Romano via Twitter, Inter Milan are trying to sign Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah on loan this summer. The centre-back also has interest from Tottenham Hotspur and AS Roma.
The 23-year-old was promoted to the senior team in 2021. He has previously spent time on loan at Ipswich Town, Huddersfield and FC Lorient. And now he could be headed to Italy.
Chalobah was the backup centre-back for Thomas Tuchel last season. The German tactician gave him quite a few minutes last season, and the player impressed. But the arrival of Kalidou Koulibaly and the potential arrival of Wesley Fofana could push him further down the pecking order.
The former England Under-21 international made 30 appearances for the club in all competitions last season. He even scored three goals and provided two assists in the process. The 23-year-old also started in both the domestic cup finals and the UEFA Super Cup.
It will be wise to keep the defender in the team. The player has a contract till 2026 and could prove vital for Tuchel this season. Given the scarcity at the back and with less than a week remaining before the deadline day, letting a defender with good experience under his belt seems unwise.
But then if the player wants to play more, a loan move is the best option. This will allow the player to get his desired playing time, while the Blues can monitor his development much better. Notably, Inter have also loaned Romelu Lukaku on a season-long deal from Chelsea.
He is not the only Blue of interest to different parties. Serie A side Spezia have asked for Ethan Ampadu, another centre-back, on loan. The Blues are still in contact with Fofana and hopefully, a deal can be reached. Emerson Palmieri to West Ham United is almost done, with an official announcement still pending.
It remains to be seen if any deal is struck for Chalobah. Tuchel will hope for a better performance from his side after being thrashed by Leeds United last weekend. Fans will hope they can bounce back with a win against Leicester City this Saturday.
It remains to be seen what defensive line he plays and if he has the luxury of picking Fofana in the coming games. Regardless of that, he would still be smart to keep a hold of Chalobah just for that added security.
