Transfer News: Chelsea and Manchester United are not in negotiations for Harry Maguire
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano via Twitter has confirmed that there are no ongoing negotiations between Chelsea and Manchester United for Harry Maguire.
Last week, The Guardian reported that the Blues were interested in the United captain. They wanted Maguire in a swap deal that would have seen Christian Pulisic go the other way.
But that seems to be not true as confirmed by Romano. Thomas Tuchel is keen to add another centre-back to his squad before the transfer window closes.
Chelsea are interested in Leicester City’s centre-back Wesley Fofana. He is said to be the main priority for the Blues currently. But, negotiating a deal with the Foxes is proving to be a Herculean task for the west London club.
Maguire joined United from Leicester in 2019 for a world-record fee of £80 million. But the move has not gone according to plan. He has been subject to criticism from his fans and pundits alike. The 29-year-old has made some silly mistakes in the past that led to his side conceding goals.
He was considered a backup to Fofana. Should the Blues be unable to bring the French to London, they had an alternate ready. But it seems that is not to be the case now.
The 29-year-old England international is a decent defender to have. He has shown his quality when he plays for his country-something that cannot be said the same for when he plays for his club. Perhaps, a move away from his current team would help him reignite his form.
Given the performances he has shown for the Red Devils in recent months, it is likely that Chelsea fans will not be happy with his potential arrival. For now, at least they can be calm as no negotiations have taken place. He was rested against Liverpool and United’s new-look defence consisting of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez did the job well.
