Transfer News: Chelsea interested in Barcelona striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

According to popular Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Chelsea are considering a move for talented Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Barcelona this summer to address their striking woes.

Romano claims that the Blues have already started discussions with the 33-year-old regarding a move to Stamford Bridge this summer but dialogue between the two clubs are yet to begin regarding a potential move for the veteran Gabon striker.

Aubameyang joined Barcelona from Arsenal in January after falling out of favour with the Gunners under Mikel Arteta. One of Arsenal’s best strikers in recent years, things turned sour very soon for the veteran and he moved on for a free transfer after being released from his contract.

His move to Barcelona proved to be a huge success for the 33-year-old with Aubameyang being an immediate hit at the Spanish club. He helped secure Champions League football for the struggling Spanish giants and looked set to continue with them this season.

In 38 games for both clubs last season, Aubameyang managed to score 20 goals and provide three assists across all competitions. Most of these goals came for Barcelona after his move in January which shows how influential his move was.

Barcelona signed Robert Lewandowski this summer and the Polish superstar is likely to displace Aubameyang as the first-choice starter in Xavi Hernandez’s team. Aubameyang could still have a crucial role to play but he might want to move in search of regular game time.

Chelsea handed Ousmane Dembele as PSG pull out of transfer pursuit.
A reunion on the cards?

Chelsea have had striker issues throughout last season with both Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner failing to perform to their standards. The Belgian superstar has left the club whilst the future of the German striker is far from certain as things stand.

Despite it being a short-term option, Aubameyang has shown that he still has what is required to contribute regularly to the Blues and he could turn out to be a very smart acquisition for Thomas Tuchel. It is not clear if Barcelona want to sell him though.

More Chelsea News

Signing a former Arsenal star might not sit well with Chelsea fans but desperate times need desperate measures and Aubameyang could be one such signing. More so, the striker has also worked effectively with Tuchel at Borussia Dortmund. A rekindling of that old flame might benefit all parties involved.
