According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea are in talks to sign young Dinamo Moscow midfielder Arsen Zakharyan. The deal will be a complex one due to strict FIFA rules for European clubs signing players from Ukraine or Russia.
The 19-year-old highly-rated midfielder has a release clause of £12.6m, which would allow him to easily deal with the possibility of leaving his native country Russia to play football elsewhere in Europe.
However, the deal will be complicated due to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, which will make the payment of this transfer difficult. Moreover, there are concerns regarding a work permit for the player and the navigation of complex rules.
Chelsea have already signed three promising young players – Carney Chukwuemeka, Cesare Casadei and Omari Hutchinson to bolster their youth team, as part of owner Todd Boehly’s “Vision 2030”. The American aims to make the youth team strong enough to challenge for first-team spots in the future.
Zakharyan is a versatile midfield player, who prefers the box-to-box role, but can play as a wide midfielder and also as a defensive midfielder or a number 10.
The 19-year-old, who is a Dinamo Moscow academy product, made 34 appearances in all competitions last season scoring nine goals and assisting nine. He was generally deployed as a left-sided central midfielder.
Chelsea do have a reputation for getting things right when it comes to signing the best young talents to improve their youth team. Zakharyan is another example of that because the player is top quality at such a young age.
If the Blues manage to deal with the complexity of this deal, it would be a fantastic coup for them. Zakharyan is one for the future and he has the qualities to be one of the best midfielders in this Chelsea team in years to come.
