Transfer News: Chelsea defender Levi Colwill joins Brighton & Hove Albion on loan
Chelsea centre-back Levi Colwill has joined Brighton & Hove Albion on a season-long loan for next season, both the clubs confirmed. This comes after Marc Cucurella made the switch to west London earlier today.
Graham Potter, Brighton’s manager has said that he is looking forward to working with the youngster. The Seagulls are said to have beaten competition from many other teams for the signature of the 19-year-old. Speaking on the club’s website (h/t football.london), Potter had nothing but high praises for the defender.
“Levi has enormous potential and has already shown his ability last season in the Championship and with England. I am really looking forward to working with him on the training pitch, and in matches over the course of the season.”
The 19-year-old England Under-21 star spent the last season on loan at Championship side Huddersfield. He was pivotal and led his team to the playoff final which they lost to Nottingham Forest. However, Colwill showed his talent and received praises from everywhere.
Now he has a chance of playing in the top flight. Brighton finished ninth last season and they would hope to make a European spot this time. Colwill has the chance to help them make that and earn a name for himself.
A centre-back by trade, he can also play in the left-back position. With Thomas Tuchel having a defensive crisis, Colwill had the chance to impress him during pre-season and book a slot in the team for next season. But that was not to happen as an injury led to the player being axed from the pre-season squad.
But that does not mean he is not good enough for Chelsea. The club wants to challenge for silverware next season and that requires the expertise of experienced players. Colwill has the chance to get that required experience at Brighton. He can show why he is one of the best young talents in the country.
A loan move also benefits Tuchel and co. They can monitor the player’s performance during the season. something which may have been difficult to come by if he stayed at Chelsea. Brighton play very fluid and possession-based football and Colwill will have a great chance at developing his game at The Amex.
