According to popular Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Barcelona want to accelerate the pursuit of veteran Chelsea left wing-back, Marcos Alonso, to reinforce their left-back position.
The Spanish left-back wants to leave the club this summer and make the move to the Spanish giants and Chelsea might now be willing to part ways with Alonso. They are set to sign Marc Cucurella imminently and this could facilitate Alonso’s exit.
Barcelona are interested in signing Alonso and are set to make an offer for the defender. The Spanish club are seeking a player to provide backup to Jordi Alba and it will be the perfect opportunity for Alonso to wind down his career in his home country.
The 31-year-old player has been on the ranks of the Blues since 2016 when he joined from Fiorentina and he has had a rather mixed time at Stamford Bridge. One thing that cannot be denied though is the fact that Alonso has been a more than decent backup for Chelsea over the years.
The Spaniard found himself playing much more than he was expected to last season due to an injury suffered by Ben Chilwell which ruled him out for the second half of the season. Alonso did a pretty admirable job at that for Thomas Tuchel’s side.
The 31-year-old played 46 times for the Blues last season scoring four goals and providing five assists across all competitions. He still can do a job as the backup but we have other options and with Alonso wanting to leave, it is best that we move on.
We cannot expect a huge fee for Alonso but we will be shipping out a player who doesn’t really have much time left in the top-flight. Playing for one of the top clubs in his home town could also be the perfect way for Alonso to sign off from what has been a decent career in blue.
With us signing Cucurella soon, this could facilitate us to give Alonso what he wants. If Barcelona make a substantial offer that we find acceptable, we can accept it so that Marcos Alonso can leave. This transfer could speed up in recent weeks.
Marcos Alonso has been a huge servant for Chelsea. We can be thankful for everything that he has done for us and move on to the future.
