A View From The Bridge

Barcelona closing in on signing Chelsea defender

Transfer News: Barcelona closing in on Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso

According to popular Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Barcelona are closing in on a move for talented Spanish left-wing-back Marcos Alonso from Chelsea this summer.

The Spanish giants have been interested in signing Alonso from the Blues this summer. Talks have been going on throughout the summer and it seems like the two parties have finally reached an agreement on the fee for the Spanish veteran.

The fact the Blues have signed Marc Cucurella from Brighton seems to have accelerated the process for Alonso’s exit from Stamford Bridge. The player is very keen on going back to his home country and joining Barcelona and it looks set to happen now.

Alonso joined Chelsea from Fiorentina in 2016. His overall career with the Blues has been mixed at best with the Spaniard having moments in a Chelsea shirt but often drawing criticism for his performances, especially on the defensive side.

The 31-year-old played 46 times for the Blues last time, much more than he was expected to due to the injury of Ben Chilwell. Alonso did a very admirable job stepping in scoring five goals and providing six assists across all competitions.

Romano claims that the fee that the two clubs are agreeing upon seems to be in the range of around €10m. That is welcome money for a player who is on the wrong side of his 30s and does not have many years left in the top flight of football.

It also makes sense for Alonso as this could be his last big club move in his career. He gets to play the fag end of his career in his home country with one of the best clubs in the league and this could turn out to be a great move for all parties involved.

In Ben Chilwell, Emerson and Marc Cucurella, Chelsea have more than enough options to play at left wing-back and Thomas Tuchel should not have the problem of finding a replacement for the Spanish veteran. He could still use Marc Cucurella in a different position too.

Marcos Alonso, despite all the criticism, has been a great servant for Chelsea. His time at the club is over and we can all move on to the next chapter.
