Romano: Ligue 1 side in talks with Chelsea for 23-year-old centre-back

Transfer News: AS Monaco in talks with Chelsea for Malang Sarr

According to journalist Santi Aouna via Twitter (h/t Fabrizio Romano), French side AS Monaco are said to be in negotiations with Chelsea for Malang Sarr. Fulham are also said to be interested in the centre-back.

A former OGC Nice graduate, Sarr joined Chelsea in 2020. The 23-year-old was part of Thomas Tuchel’s squad last season but struggled to get playing time.

League 1 is said to be the preferred destination of the player and looks like he could be on his way away from Stamford Bridge this season.

A fringe player for Tuchel he could be on his way back to France where he would hope to get more playing time. The centre-back managed to make only eight appearances for the Blues in the Premier League last season.

This clearly shows that Tuchel does not regard him and he could benefit from a move away. But considering the limited options that the German coach has at the back, sending Sarr away raises some questions. Thiago Silva and Kalidou Koulibaly are the first-team options at the back.

Trevoh Chalobah has played at the back and it is clear he is not ready to start games for the club yet. Tuchel has been in the market for defensive reinforcements, but sending away defenders in the team makes less sense. An area that needs urgent reinforcements, it would be unwise for Chelsea to let defenders go.

It would be smart to allow him to leave if the Blues can manage to get in a replacement. Even though Sarr is not preferred so much by Tuchel, he helps in adding depth to the squad and can also play as left-back. Still just 23 years of age, the Frenchman has a long way to go in his career.

It remains to be seen if Sarr is allowed to leave this summer. The Frenchman has huge potential in him and Chelsea could regret selling him. A loan deal would be a safer option if he were to be sent out this summer.

It is especially crucial to be careful with our existing squad in case we cannot sign another centre-back ahead of the new season – especially given Cesar Azpilicueta’s persistent links to Barcelona.
