Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel has hinted that he misses Petr Cech at the club. While speaking to Soccer AM (h/t Mirror), Tuchel has suggested that the void of his expertise is being felt at the west London club.
A former Chelsea player, Cech served as Technical and Performance advisor for three years at Chelsea before deciding to step down on June 30 earlier this summer. He was part of the overhaul by new owner Todd Boehly as former chairman Bruce Buck and former director Marina Granovskaia were relieved of their duties.
Boehly has been acting as the interim sporting director as of now and has brought in players like Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly and Marc Cucurella to the club this summer. But Tuchel still misses Cech who was a big key factor at the club.
“I still think we are in transition with a new ownership. Petr Cech out who was also such a big key factor, also for me in the season in the building here in Cobham, speaking with everybody and the staff and being a huge support for me.”
Cech is a Chelsea club legend, being the main man between the sticks for the club during his playing days. The 40-year-old had moved to Chelsea in 2004 from the French side Stade Rennais. He played for the west London outfit for 11 years before moving across to Arsenal in 2015.
The former Chelsea man made 493 appearances for the Blues in all competitions keeping a total of 228 clean sheets. His performance in the Champions League final of 2012 is still one of the best by any keeper in the tournament. A four-time Premier League winner, Cech has written his name on the walls of Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea have seen a key number of senior players depart this summer including Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Timo Werner. Despite making some good signings, Chelsea are still looking for players in the market.
Despite signing Koulibaly and Cucurella, Tuchel is desperate for more defensive reinforcements. Wesley Fofana is the current primary target for the Blues, having lost out on some centre-backs during the course of the summer. It remains to be seen if Chelsea can land Fofana before the window closes on September 1.
Chelsea got off to a good start having won 1-0 against Everton in their opening match last Saturday. Tuchel will hope that his team can perform better when they host rivals Tottenham Hotspur this Sunday.
The administration has massive expectations to live up to. Under Roman Abramovich and co, the Blues became a dynasty in England and won virtually every trophy they could during that time.
Manchester City and Liverpool continue to be our main challengers and that is where the task is cut out for Boehly and co- to make the Blues destroy the duopoly established by Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola.
