Report: Misfiring Chelsea ace could be on his way back to former club

Optimism surrounds the transfer of Chelsea striker Timo Werner back to RB Leipzig

According to The Daily Telegraph reporter Mike McGrath via Absolute Chelsea on Twitter (h/t football.london), there is optimism surrounding a possible deal between Chelsea and RB Leipzig for Timo Werner.

The 26-year-old is looking for a suitable match and his former club seems to be the destination being touted. The German isn’t worried about the money and just wants to play regular minutes on the pitch.

The Blues got Werner in the summer of 2020 from Die Roten Bullen. The 26-year-old had proven himself to be a prolific goalscorer in his four seasons at the Red Bull Arena for the Bundesliga club.

In 156 appearances for Leipzig, Werner scored 90 goals and provided 40 assists. The German striker also became a regular for the national side, owing to his impressive displays for the Red Bulls.

But his time in London has been somewhat underwhelming. Werner has failed to find the back of the net consistently. Chelsea got him to be their talisman and score goals, but the German has been lacklustre with his finishing.

In the 26-year-old’s two seasons with the Stamford Bridge side, Werner has featured in 89 games and has scored 23 goals. The output has been largely disappointing given the high hopes the club had for him.

Chelsea have more problems to deal with now that Werner looks to be on his way out. If the 26-year-old leaves, we’ll be left short on centre-forward options. The Blues loaned out Romelu Lukaku back to Inter Milan as well this summer.

It remains to be seen whether he leaves and if the deal is a loan or a permanent one. Hopefully, Werner finds his feet. The German has had his moments in a blue shirt. But it looks like we won’t be able to count on his heroics for the long season ahead.
