Chelsea today announced the signing of Brighton & Hove Albion left-back Marc Cucurella. The 24-year-old has signed a six-year deal at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues are said to have paid £55 million with another £7 million as potential add-ons for the services of the Spaniard. He becomes the Seagulls’ most expensive sale surpassing the £50 million Arsenal paid for Ben White last summer.
And now the Spaniard is excited to begin a new chapter of his life. The player made his Premier League debut last season and impressed everyone with his performances. Speaking to the club’s website (h/t football.london), the Spaniard gave his first words after being revealed as a Chelsea player.
“I’m really happy. It’s a big opportunity for me to join one of the best clubs in the world and I’m going to work hard to be happy here and help the team”
His words make it known that he is aware of the task at hand. He isn’t going to have a clear pathway into our first team but such competition can only drive our players to be better and not be caught on their heels over the course of the campaign.
A left-back who can play as a left-midfielder and centre-back, he would make a fine addition to Thomas Tuchel’s squad. The player enjoyed a very good spell last season, making 35 league appearances for the Seagulls and helping them finish ninth on the table.
His impressive performances earned him the player of the season award at Brighton. Manchester City were also interested in the player but later decided to pull the plug. Cucurella is expected to provide competition to Ben Chilwell, who has returned back after his horrific injury last season.
Cucurella would fit right into the team having played in a back-three system at Brighton. With Tuchel looking to strengthen his defence ahead of the new season, he has signed one gem of a player.
Sky Sports confirmed that Chelsea were able to register the player on time and he could make his debut tomorrow against Everton. This will be another welcoming news for Tuchel who will hope to get off to a flying start on the opening matchday. But whether Tuchel uses him remains to be seen.
Tuchel has quite a few wing-backs in his team. It will be interesting to see how and where he deploys Cucurella. Just 24 years old, the player has a long future ahead of him. Fans will hope that he makes a name for himself and leaves a legacy at Stamford Bridge.
