Malang Sarr in talks with Ligue 1 sides as Fulham transfer kept on hold by Chelsea
Malang Sarr has opened up conversations with Ligue 1 sides in France amidst Fulham bid, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Twitter. The 23-year-old centre-back has been linked with a move away from the club this summer.
Nizaar Kinsella, via the Evening Standard, claims the Blues blocked the Frenchman’s possible transfer to the newly promoted Premier League side until a new centre-back came through the doors at Stamford Bridge.
It remains to be seen whether Chelsea will allow Sarr to leave this summer. We’ve signed a new centre-back in Kalidou Koulibaly in this window. But it seems Thomas Tuchel wants another defender in the squad before letting the 23-year-old go.
Last season, Sarr played a vital role as a backup option in the squad. While he was on the bench a lot, the Frenchman did come into the team in critical moments. The 23-year-old played at left-back as well as centre-back in the previous campaign.
With Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen leaving on a free transfer after the end of last season, the Blues have a shortage of defenders in the squad. We’ve only signed one centre-back this summer. Other defenders are also vying for a move away this window.
Cesar Azpilicueta is adept at playing both as a right-back and centre-back. But our captain is angling to end his time in a blue shirt. Marcos Alonso similarly has an uncertain future at the Bridge.
Keeping this in mind, the club need to ensure Tuchel has a strong squad for next season before we let any of our players leave. If we aren’t able to get any more incomings through the door this summer, keeping a hold of the current members of the squad is wise.
