Romelu Lukaku is suggesting Inter Milan sign Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah
According to the Standard, loaned-out striker Romelu Lukaku is suggesting his current club Inter Milan sign young defender Trevoh Chalobah from his parent club Chelsea before the transfer window ends.
The Italian side have retained interest to sign the 23-year-old on loan shortly after the Blues signed Cesare Casadei from them.
Although Chalobah is currently happy at Chelsea, the situation could change if the Blues manage to complete the signing of Leicester City centre-back Wesley Fofana, the arrival of which can push the former further down the pecking order in that department of the squad.
The England U-21 international spent seasons 2019/20 and 2020/21 on loan at Huddersfield Town and French side FC Lorient respectively. He made a breakthrough in the Chelsea first eleven last season and showcased why he has a massive future ahead of him.
With regards to his positioning, Chalobah is comfortable playing in a back four or a back three, though he was chiefly used as a right-sided centre-back in a three-man central defence for Thomas Tuchel’s side.
Chelsea lost Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger from last season’s squad. They have added Kalidou Koulibaly and Marc Cucurella to bolster their defence. With their interest pretty strong on Fofana, there might not be loads of game time for the 23-year-old this season.
However, one needs to know that Thiago Silva is 37 years old, while Koulibaly and Azpilicueta are on the other side of 30 as well. Hence, if the Chalobah gives himself a year or two, gain experience by playing first-team football elsewhere, he could be drafted back in that defence in two to three years time.
At this stage of his career, it would be best for the club’s academy product to seek game time and gain experience. Thus, the possibility of moving to Inter on loan sounds promising.

Serie A is certainly one league where defenders learn and do the defensive badges in a proper manner. Acquiring that knowledge can only upgrade the 23-year-old by the time he comes back next summer.
But that hopefully would depend on us signing a new defender or not. Azpilicueta’s contract renewal is good news and so is Koulibaly’s arrival, but it still doesn’t mean we have good depth in defence going into the new season.
