Former Premier League manager Harry Redknapp has stated that Frenkie de Jong prefers a move to Chelsea this summer over Manchester United. The Dutch midfielder’s future at Barcelona is uncertain.
De Jong has been linked with the Red Devils throughout the summer. But the Blues are also one of the potential destinations for the 25-year-old to choose from.
Speaking to The Byline (h/t Express), the 75-year-old revealed that he heard from someone higher up at United about De Jong’s desire to join Chelsea. Redknapp, who won the FA Cup with Portsmouth in 2008, believes the Dutch midfielder prioritises a move to London over Manchester.
“Now it looks like De Jong wants to go to Chelsea.
“I know that for a fact, he wants to go to Chelsea. So Man United are not going to get him, I’ve had that from somebody right at the very, very top at Man United.”
Chelsea currently have a host of options in the middle of the park. N’golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic have solidified their position as the two pivots over the years. Jorginho is another quality player fighting for a place in the XI.
It wouldn’t be easy for De Jong if he were to come to Stamford Bridge. The competition in the side is immense. But the Dutch midfielder certainly has the qualities to get into Thomas Tuchel’s plans.
Also, Kante has a year left on his current contract. The French midfielder’s future is currently under balance. We could do with some sort of security in the middle of the park.
Chelsea also have Conor Gallagher and Billy Gilmour in the squad for the start of the new season. The 22-year-old had an impressive loan spell with Crystal Palace. The English youngster has turned into a decent number eight.
Fans would rejoice about a possible deal for De Jong. He’s one of the best midfielders in the world. The 25-year-old’s versatility is also an added bonus. The Dutch national has played as a centre-back for Barcelona on occasions. De Jong to Chelsea would be an exciting move. Hopefully, Todd Boehly is able to get it over the line.
