Gustavo Poyet believes Chelsea should sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as Timo Werner exit nears
Former Chelsea winger Gustavo Poyet believes that the Blues should sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang amidst talks of Timo Werner leaving Stamford Bridge. He claims that the Gabon international would be the ‘perfect’ replacement.
The former Arsenal captain joined Barcelona in January on a free transfer. He enjoyed a decent second half of the season there scoring 11 goals in 17 league appearances for the La Liga club.
And now Gus, while speaking to Lord Ping (h/t Metro), has said that the 33-year-old would be the ideal signing for Chelsea. Timo Werner is said to be on his way back to RB Leipzig this summer and the Blues, as a result, could be looking to bring in a potential replacement.
Despite having a fairly good six months at Barcelona, Aubameyang is not part of Xavi’s plans. Memphis Depay and new signing Robert Lewandowski are all above the pecking order than the Gabon international. Chelsea have been linked with a move for Aubameyang and Pouet believes he would be a good signing for Thomas Tuchel.
Aubameyang would be perfect for Chelsea. He looks happy and back to his best scoring goals.
The former Arsenal man is a proven Premier League striker and a lethal one too. This is something that Tuchel could do considering the only option that he has as a proper number nine is Armando Broja. The Albanian had a decent time at Southampton but still needs more experience.
Aubameyang is already a proven striker. The 33-year-old scored 92 times in 163 appearances for the Gooners in all competitions during his four years at the north London club. A lethal and clinical striker, who is equally good in the air, he could help Tuchel’s side bag in some more goals this season.
More importantly, Tuchel has already coached the striker during their time together at Borussia Dortmund. Both will be familiar with each other and the striker would have very less problems adapting to Tuchel’s tactics. However, given his age, he would only be a short-term solution to the problem.
With the new season already underway, Tuchel will have to act fast if he wants to land the player. The earlier Chelsea have a squad ready, the better it will be for Tuchel. Given the limited options in the market for a striker, Aubameyang could prove to be an ideal signing for the Blues this summer.

No one would expect him to be a long-term solution to our personnel problem in the number nine position. Given his age, he can do a job in the short term while the Blues then earn themselves time to see what they can do about that position in the future.
