Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) is interested in signing Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante
According to The Times, French Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are interested in signing N’Golo Kante from Chelsea and bringing him back to his homeland, who has one year left on his current deal.
PSG are evaluating Kante’s situation at the club with his current deal about to expire and there is little advancement as regards a new deal from both the player and the club side.
The French midfielder has been a mainstay of the Chelsea squad since his arrival from Leicester City however, the past couple of seasons has seen injury issues curtail his game time.
Now at 31 years of age, Chelsea are also looking to evaluate whether it makes sense to hand the midfielder a new contract amidst concerns regarding his age and frequent injuries.
Thomas Tuchel emphasised a similar stance when speaking about the dilemma surrounding Kante’s future.
“You cannot [disregard Kanté’s injury record]. You have to consider everything that is on the table, and on the table is his potential, on the table is his influence, and his quality. But on the table of course is his age, his salary and his injury rate, of course.
The French midfielder is the second highest earner of the team, only behind Kai Havertz and therefore it is imperative that a reasonable decision is made soon, considering he will be allowed to speak to other clubs in the coming months.
No individual can deny the impact that Kante has had on the Chelsea squad, being instrumental in their 2017-18 Premier League win and the 2020-21 UEFA Champions League win.
The World Cup winner has won everything there is to win for a professional footballer and a presence of such stature is always beneficial to any dressing room. However, it is a concerning fact that Kante has missed 40 games since the beginning of 2020.
Chelsea in the past have been criticised for their policy of contracts negotiations with players over 30 but with the recent contract extension of Cesar Azpiculeta, there seems to be a shift in stance.
It would be wise for us to evaluate all considerations and come to a decision soon, for there will be a plethora of suitors such as PSG who would want to acquire the World Cup winner’s services.
