In what will come as good news to Chelsea fans, the club has announced the signing of Marc Cucurella from Brighton & Hove Albion.
Chelsea are said to have completed the signing for £55 million with another £7 million in add-ons. He is not the only player on the move as Levi Colwill from Chelsea has joined the Seagulls on a season-long loan.
The deal was said to have been completed yesterday and the fans were excited about it. However, Brighton announced that no such agreement had been reached. Today, Chelsea took a sly dig at their rivals after announcing the 24-year-old Spaniard in a tweet that mirrored the one posted by the Seagulls.
Cucurella has signed a six-year contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge till 2028. Manchester City were also in the fray for the left-back but pulled out after refusing to meet the valuation of the player.
A left-back by trade, the 24-year-old can play in the left-midfield and also as a centre-back. The Spaniard joined the Premier League side last summer and impressed in his debut season. The Spaniard made 35 appearances for the Seagulls in the league last season and won their player of the season award.
He will challenge Ben Chilwell for a position in the team. Chilwell had missed out most of the last season due to injury. But the player is now back to full fitness and is likely to take his regular place in the team. Cucurella could be deployed in the centre-back position by Thomas Tuchel till they sign a centre-back.
The arrival of Cucurella and the recovery of Chilwell pushes the Spaniard down the pecking order. Barcelona are said to be in negotiations with Chelsea for Alonso. Cucurella has made a big money move and will have a task ahead of him to live up to that fee.
With the new season starting tomorrow, it remains to be seen if Chelsea can register the player on time. If not then the fans will have to wait until at least the second match day for the player to make his debut. Tuchel has a gem in his hands and he will know that.
Now, the club would be wise to turn their attention towards strengthening the centre-back area. Cucurella isn’t a household name and we have paid a premium to get him.
Perhaps clubs are getting a smell of Thomas Tuchel’s apparent desperation to sign defenders. The Blues lost out on Jules Kounde to Barcelona but continue to be linked with players such as Benjamin Pavard, Milan Skriniar, and Wesley Fofana.
