Ex-Chelsea forward Florent Malouda speaking for Ladbrokes (h/t Daily Star) was confident of his former team’s chances against Tottenham Hotspur when they meet up in the Premier League on Monday. He also stated that the Blues will finish well and above their city rivals.
Even with Spurs having made a great improvement under manager Antonio Conte, Malouda is of the belief that Chelsea will come out victorious in the fixture. He expects the game to end 3-1 with the Blues emerging victorious. Obviously having a bit of a bias, he gives an explanation to his credit.
Conte will have a new look Spurs to his credit, having had a very successful transfer window overseeing the signings of stars including Ivan Perisic, Richarlison, and Yves Bissouma among others.
“I think overall, they will finish above Tottenham. It’s definitely something I wish happens, but also when I take my Chelsea hat off, knowing the ambition of this Chelsea team; they want to succeed – they want to prove something, and I believe they can have a good season.”
“I will go with Chelsea to beat Tottenham 3-1 this weekend. I think there’ll be a lot of goals in this game, and I’d expect Tottenham to score, but I’m backing my old side to win 3-1.”
Chelsea, themselves are coming off a good transfer window so far. Among the big names signed are Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly. Other signings include Marc Cucurella, Carney Chukwuemeka, and Gabriel Slonina. The Blues had a winning start to their Premier League campaign, winning 1-0 at Everton, thanks to a late first-half penalty scored by Jorginho.
Thomas Tuchel has had a good record against Tottenham winning all of his five encounters against the North London side. But the side he will be facing come this weekend has to be different from what he is used to. Spurs came back from a goal deficit to beat Southampton 4-1 at home.
With the season underway, both Chelsea and Tottenham would look to improve on the previous league campaign wherein they finished third and fourth respectively to Manchester City and Liverpool. 42-year-old Malouda additionally praised Conte’s work at Tottenham, citing a “strong place” the club is in.
“The stability, and the fact that Antonio Conte has improved his squad from last season based on what he understood, identifying areas he knows he needs to improve.”
A strong Tottenham team will face a very ambitious Chelsea side this Sunday. This is the first “top-six” fixture this season and promises a lot of fireworks given it is a London derby as well.
After Tottenham at home, the Blues travel to Leeds this weekend followed by Leicester City at home the weekend that follows. Hopefully, Malouda’s prediction comes true so we go into the game against the Foxes with six points from two games.
