Speaking in his pre-match presser (h/t Mirror) ahead of his side’s Premier League fixture against Leeds United, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has claimed that there might be changes in the penalty-taking duties.
If his words are anything to go by, Italy international and 2020 UEFA Euro winner, Jorginho, could have spot-kick duties taken away from him in the near future.
“Maybe we need to take Jorginho’s penalties away. For strikers, this sometimes can increase their numbers dramatically”
Chelsea have been struggling with the outputs generated by its attackers and the departures of Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan and Timo Werner to RB Leipzig have added more concerns. Therefore, Tuchel believes switching the penalty duties to one of the forward players will do them a world of good and raise their level.
Tuchel has shown worry over the fact that the forwards are not able to register double digits in a season and acknowledges the importance of goals for a forward.
“I think strikers are a very special breed, they’re very sensitive but also very self-confident,”
However, the manager has also heaped praise and acknowledged the importance of Jorginho as the designated penalty taker and deservedly so. Since his transfer from Napoli, Jorginho has converted 15 spot kicks while only missing 4 in the period.
“But then who would take a penalty from Jorginho? We want to win in the end. He a fantastically good penalty taker!”
It is particularly important for a side to have a calm and composed penalty taker, when there are chances that the spot kick might be a difference maker in the game, such as the 1-0 result of the fixture against Everton.
Hence, Thomas Tuchel has been presented with a dilemma of wanting to help his forwards but also not letting results suffer from it. In the end, a manager will be judged for the results that his team generates and it would not matter if it is by playing proactive football and scoring hefty amounts of goals or through a scrappy win.
It will be interesting to see if the situation arrives in the next game against Leicester City at home next weekend. There were no opportunities for us to take a penalty kick against Leeds United – a game we lost by an embarrassing 3-0 scoreline.
