Speaking in an interview as reported on Football.London, new Chelsea signing Marc Cucurella gave his verdict on snubbing Premier League champions Manchester City in favour of a move to Stamford Bridge this summer.
Chelsea signed Cucurella from Brighton and Hove Albion for a deal worth £60m. days before the start of this Premier League season. He made his debut off the bench in the first game against Everton, and played the London derby against Tottenham Hotspur from the start.
The 24-year-old played well in that game, providing an assist for the game’s first goal, scored by Kalidou Koulibaly. Other than that, he was solid defensively and was a constant outlet going forward.
He was a Manchester City target during this summer window amidst his transfer request to Brighton. Eventually, the Spaniard ended up at Chelsea.
Speaking about snubbing City, here is what the player had to say:
The summer was busy, a lot of rumours. When I was with Brighton in the summer, I thought it was a good moment for me to move to a big club and I think Chelsea are a big club. I am very happy to be here, they were very interested in me all summer, so I’m very happy.
Cucurella was also asked about his best position on the field. The Spaniard was quick to acknowledge that he likes to play anywhere on the left-hand side, but prefers to play at left-back because that is where he played when starting out and playing for the academies.
The 24-year-old has started his Chelsea career playing as a left wing-back though, with potential that he can be used as a left-sided centre-back as well.
When he heard of the Chelsea interest, here is what he said:
I am very happy because it’s a lot of money and it’s a bit responsiblity for me. I am happy because Todd (Boehly) and the gaffer were very interested in me coming here. So I am very happy to be here and I need to work hard, adapt to the team, and be ready to play well for the club
Cucurella has been one of the best fullbacks/wing-backs in the league for the past 12-18 months. The Spaniard’s performances last season for Brighton were for sure one of the driving reasons behind the two biggest clubs in England vying for his signature.
The 24-year-old’s quality and versatility to play in different positions adds to the upgraded quality he can bring to this Chelsea squad. Moreover, he is in such an age where the best years are ahead of him, which can only be good news for the Blues and their supporters.
Thomas Tuchel and the club should be happy that this player did not go to Manchester City, as it would have made the Champions stronger than they already are.
