Chelsea open direct talks with Manchester United target and Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong
According to The Athletic (h/t football.london), Chelsea have made their interest in Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong concrete and have have opened direct talks for the Manchester United target.
The Red Devils have been chasing the 25-year-old this summer. But Erik ten Hag’s side have been unable to reach any sort of agreement as of yet. The Stamford Bridge side will have to contend with United in the race for De Jong.
Chelsea seem to be pushing for new signings now, with the start of the season less than a week away. We’ve completed two major signings so far in Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly.
But we’ve failed to bring in more quality players for Thomas Tuchel to rely on. And the future of a lot of our players right now is uncertain.
Our defence has been bolstered with the arrival of Koulibaly from Napoli. But considering the dearth of options at the back, we need more incoming.
Similarly, while Sterling’s addition strengthens the squad, Chelsea still lack an out-and-out striker. As a result, we struggled to score chances last season, with most of our attackers faltering.
The midfield is another area that needs to be addressed. While Ngolo Kante and Mateo Kovacic have been brilliant for us, they both suffered injuries last season. Also, the Frenchman has just one more season left on his contract.
Other options in the midfield do not excite fans. Jorginho was inconsistent last season and made a few errors. Ruben Loftus-Cheek, on the other hand, hasn’t been able to take his opportunities in the team.

De Jong has proven himself at the highest stage with different clubs. The Holland international is considered one of the best midfielders in the world. It would be wise for Chelsea to go after the 25-year-old’s signature.
