According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea are investigate an alleged racist abuse incident aimed at Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min during the London derby between these two clubs at Stamford Bridge this past Sunday.
Footage has appeared on social media with a clear view of a supporter making racial gestures towards Son when he was taking a corner kick in front of the Shed End. The Metropolitan police are also involved in the investigation, while Tottenham are well aware of the situation.
The Chelsea-Spurs had a lot of controversial moments on the field as well, with referee Anthony Taylor and VAR Mike Dean making debatable decisions in the build-up of both the Tottenham goals. There were a couple of altercations between managers Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte as well, the second one leading to both getting a red card.
But if found guilty, this incident tops it all with regards to the shame and utter disgrace. Players take the knee before the first whistle of every league game to show solidarity and eradicate racism and inequality from the game. However, incidents like this haven’t subsided, that too in such big games where the camera is going to pan to every possible angle.
The Chelsea official statement also conveyed the same messages where there is no place for such ill-discipline and discriminatory behaviour.
Chelsea will hope this is the last time things like this happen in their stadium or within their fan base going to any stadiums or making comments online. Stricter punishments and laws can be the only solution when dealing with people who have no social morals and manners.
The Blues’ next league game is away to Leeds United at Elland Road this Sunday afternoon. Manager Tuchel is unlikely to be in the touchline for that game after receiving the red card after the final whistle for the handshake altercation with Conte.
As for Spurs, they look like a real title challenger this season. We must wary of the threat they pose and not just keep our eyes on the usual suspects Liverpool and Manchester City.
