Chelsea are preparing a huge bid to sign RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol, according to Fabrizio Romano. However, that deal would potentially see the defender join the Blues in the summer of 2023.
They are prepared to put in a €90million offer for the young centre-back. Leipzig aren’t alien to such kind of a deal, having agreed on a fee with Liverpool for Naby Keita in advance, with the Guinea international arriving at Anfield in the summer of 2018.
This comes as a surprise considering how late it is in the window. The Blues have already signed Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli earlier this summer.
Cesar Azpilicueta’s contract renewal has further bolstered their defence for the time being, while Wesley Fofana looks all set to arrive from Leicester City.
This is certainly good news for the Blues fans, who would have been insecure about their team’s defence at the start of the summer transfer window.
Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen left the club on free transfers to join Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively. This left a big hole in Chelsea’s defence to be filled.
Todd Boehly and co seem to have done a good job with regards to backing manager Thomas Tuchel in the market, especially if the club seals a deal for Gvardiol.
Thiago Silva, at 37, isn’t going to keep playing on forever. The Blues would, sooner or later, need to fill the Brazil international’s boots and hopefully, that man turns out to be the 20-year-old Croatia international, Gvardiol.
