Fabrizio Romano claimed that Chelsea have reached an agreement to sign Marc Cucurella from Brighton and Hove Albion for a fee that would rise above £50million.
He also stated that Levi Colwill would join the Seagulls soon, probably as a part of the agreement. However, not long after the transfer expert’s tweet, Brighton released a statement on Twitter themselves.
The club vehemently denied any agreement being reached between them and Chelsea over a move for the Spaniard. They wrote:
“CLUB STATEMENT: MARC CUCURELLA. Contrary to inaccurate reports from numerous media outlets this evening, no agreement has been reached with any club to sell Marc Cucurella.”
The 24-year-old Spanish defender has been a man in demand this summer. Given his ability, it is understandable that top clubs would feel that they have a good chance of signing the Spaniard.
Brighton aren’t really making any progress with regards to challenging for European spots. Perhaps, the team from the south coast cherish being in the PL for as long as they can.
The Blues, meanwhile, could use a player in that position. Ben Chilwell continues to be a reliable player for Thomas Tuchel, but the Englishman’s injury last season created big problems for the German manager.
Marcos Alonso’s future isn’t sorted out as of now, and the former Fiorentina man continues to be linked with a move to Barcelona. If he leaves, it could be a very troublesome situation for the west London outfit.
It seems that Brighton don’t want to give the upper hand to Chelsea in the negotiations – if there are any, to begin with. This is a situation that will gain more clarity as time passes and one to keep an eye on for Chelsea fans.
