Marcos Alonso is close to leaving Chelsea this summer as Barcelona could rectify their financial issues with the possible sale of Martin Braithwaite, according to Football Espana (h/t football.london).
The 31-year-old has been linked with the Catalan giants this summer. However, the La Liga outfit’s money troubles have stalled the deal.
However, Barcelona could now be on the verge of a solution to their problems by parting ways with their Danish striker. The 31-year-old has barely featured under Xavi Hernandez and it seems Braithwaite’s time at the Camp Nou is nearing its end.
Alonso played a key role in Thomas Tuchel’s side last season. Ben Chilwell got injured early on and the Spaniard was the one to fill the gap in the XI.
The 31-year-old signed for Chelsea in 2016 from Fiorentina. In Antonio Conte and Alonso’s debut campaign, the team played some of the best football. The Spaniard played brilliantly as we ended up lifting the Premier League trophy.
However, over the last few years, Alonso’s influence in the side has dwindled as managers have opted for other options. The arrival of Chilwell saw the Spaniard be relegated to a secondary role.
Fans have had issues with the 31-year-old’s performances. While Alonso is one of the best going forward from the fill-back position, the Spaniard leaves a lot to be desired defensively.
During the transfer window, the left-back spot has been reinforced with the arrival of March Cucurella. The 24-year-old was one of the best full-backs in the league last season.
With Chilwell back from injury as well, Chelsea have enough cover for the left-wing-back position. Alonso has been a decent servant for the club. And it appears the Spaniard is on his way out.
