A View From The Bridge

Journo: Chelsea star “could really leave” with Serie A giants interested

Transfer News: Timo Werner could leave Chelsea this summer with Juventus interested

According to Sky Sport Italia (h/t Fabrizio Romano), Timo Werner could be on his way out of Chelsea this summer. Juventus are said to be interested in the German striker.

The journalist even adds that Chelsea offered Werner to the Italian club in exchange for centre-back Matthijs de Ligt. However, that did not materialise and de Ligt joined Bayern Munich instead.

The Blues were also planning to hijack Paris Saint-Germain’s deal for RB Leipzig defender Nordi Mukiele and had offered the 26-year-old in exchange for the right-back. However, such a deal now looks very hard to complete.

The striker being offered to clubs in exchange for players indicates that he may not have a future at Stamford Bridge. The German international was part of the pre-season squad that travelled to the United States and featured in all three friendlies.

The 26-year-old joined Chelsea from RB Leipzig in 2020 following an exceptionally good season with the German club. However, his time at the Bridge has not gone according to plan. The player has struggled in front of goal, managing to score only 23 goals in 89 appearances for the club.

If the news about his potential departure is to be believed, it could come as a blow to Thomas Tuchel. Despite being inconsistent in front of goal, he is a preferred option by Tuchel and also helps provide depth to the squad.

His departure would leave Michy Batshuayi and Armando Broja as the options available, with the former not being preferred and the latter desperate to be given a chance. One can’t blame a Chelsea fan if they forgot the Belgian was still on our books, given how insignificant he has been for the club in recent years.

Werner could leave Chelsea this summer.

Kai Havertz is usually the man who starts as number nine for Chelsea. Tuchel has added English winger Raheem Sterling to his ranks who can play down the middle as well. Having three players who can play in the middle of the front line may push Werner down the pecking order as it did last season.

More Chelsea News

With the World Cup in November, Werner will be desperate for more playing time. It remains to be seen if he will be a Chelsea player when the new season starts. Chelsea, meanwhile, must understand one thing.

They have to go into the new season with strong options in that number nine role. Not doing so could be detrimental to their chances for silverware. Broja is an option and so is Werner. We still can’t put it past the German to recreate the form he showed during his days in the Bundesliga.
