Simon Jordan does not believe Raheem Sterling is a statement signing for Chelsea
Speaking on talkSPORT (h/t football.london), former Crystal Palace owner and now pundit, Simon Jordan has said that he does not believe Raheem Sterling would be a statement signing for Chelsea. The 27-year-old English international has been heavily linked with a move away from Manchester City this summer.
Chelsea have emerged as the favourite option for the City winger, with reports claiming a deal worth £45 million-plus £10 million in add-ons has been agreed between the two rival clubs. However, for Jordan, Sterling is not a statement signing.
“On paper, because of the name, because of where he’s coming from and who he’s going to and what stage Chelsea are at — in terms of the new ownership model post-Abramovich — it looks like a really big statement signing. I personally don’t think it is.”

The England international joined Manchester City in 2015 from Liverpool for a deal worth £44 million, making him the then most expensive English player. But now that seems like a distant memory as he is close to joining Chelsea after seven years at the Etihad.
A good signing?
Sterling is said to be leaving because of falling down the pecking order. He wants regular playing time and that is something he can get at Chelsea. The Blues are in massive need to fix their roster and signing Sterling should be just the start.
With Romelu Lukaku out on loan at Inter Milan, and Timo Werner lacking a finishing touch in his play, Sterling could prove to be a phenomenal signing for the west London club. A proven goal scorer in the league, he has scored 91 goals and notched up 56 assists for the Cityzens in 225 appearances.
The 27-year-old can play on both sides of the wing and also as a number nine. This is something which Thomas Tuchel loves from a player, as he likes to rotate his attackers and shift tactics often. He has the knack of being there when passes are squared in the box, something which Chelsea fans have seen happen over the years. His arrival could help the Blues solve their goal-lacking issue upfront.
A four-time Premier League winner, Sterling would also be joining a side that strives for silverware every season and has the potential to be in the title race next season. Him joining the Blues could be a massive boost for them as they look to win their seventh league title next season and the first since the 2016/17 season.
